D1X-Rebirth 0.58.1: Descent is back, and the pad shakes

Yannick Buchy (Papiosaur) releases D1X-Rebirth 0.58.1, a MorphOS PowerPC port of Descent (Parallax Software, 1995) built on the DXX-Rebirth engine. Weightless shooting through mine tunnels, six degrees of freedom and a ceiling that turns into the floor: the game that made people queasy before there was a word for it.

The archive is playable as it is: it carries the shareware data Parallax released, seven complete levels. For the twenty-seven of the retail game, just replace descent.hog and descent.pig with the ones from a CD, GOG or Steam copy — same names, nothing else to change. Rumble support has been added.

Music plays straight away. It is MIDI, rendered by SDL2_mixer with the free freepats instrument set bundled in the drawer: nothing to install, nothing to set up.

DOSBox-JIT 1.3: a 3dfx Voodoo in a MorphOS window

Michal Zukowski releases DOSBox-JIT 1.3, his MorphOS port of DOSBox 0.74. The original SDL layer has been replaced by native components: Intuition windows and input, CyberGraphX display, CGXVideo overlay, accelerated TinyGL output, AHI sound, SANA-II networking. PowerSDL.library is no longer needed.

At the heart of the port is a PowerPC dynamic recompiler. The author quotes up to 150% of the speed of the previous MorphOS version — one and a half times, then, depending on the emulated program, the CPU settings and the machine. Some games, limited by graphics or sound, will see none of it.

The other piece is the 3dfx Voodoo Graphics SST-1: triangles, texture mapping, depth buffering, blending, fog, chroma and alpha tests. It can be computed entirely on the CPU, or go through a native TinyGL renderer that translates the emulated card's operations directly — again without SDL.

The rest follows: Hercules, CGA, Tandy, EGA, VGA, SVGA and VESA, Sound Blaster, Gravis UltraSound, MIDI and PC speaker through AHI, NE2000 networking through a SANA-II device, and an absolute mouse under Windows 3.1 and 95 — the pointer moves between the MorphOS desktop and the guest one without capture, provided the matching driver is installed inside Windows. Configuration happens in a native MUI interface, with a keyboard mapper and an autoexec editor; that is what opens when the program is started without arguments.

DOSBox-JIT requires MorphOS 3.18. TinyGL stays optional for ordinary use, but is required for the opengl outputs and for accelerated Voodoo rendering. The program is released under the GPL; the archive is 1.8 MB.

clamiga 0.6: a Common Lisp that fits in one megabyte

Manfred Bergmann releases CL-Amiga 0.6, uploaded to MorphOS-Storage by Stefan Haubenthal: a Common Lisp written for the Amiga family, which with this release arrives on MorphOS as native PowerPC — compiled with the SDK, not a 68k binary under emulation.

The 1.4 MB archive unpacks anywhere, with no assign, and carries both binaries, 68k and MorphOS. The author warns that the project is still alpha and that ANSI compliance is incomplete.

RadioNet 0.5: the BBC starts talking again

Papiosaur releases RadioNet 0.5, his internet radio player for MorphOS, built on the RadioBrowser directory.

The number for this release: of the 114 BBC addresses in the directory, 98 are not streams but playlists (.m3u8) — and a playlist was something RadioNet did not know what to do with, whatever format it announced. Almost the whole BBC was silent. Those stations now play.

As a reminder, the program draws on the RadioBrowser directory with a country filter — twenty-six are offered — keeps favourites you can reorder, shows a "Now Playing" panel with the station logo and its clickable website, and decodes AAC through the Fraunhofer FDK-AAC library, clearly better on HE-AAC.

IPP-Office 1.0: printing and scanning in the same window

Papiosaur releases IPP-Office 1.0, which puts IPP-Print 1.5 and IPP-Scan 1.8 into one program.

A cycle at the top of the window switches between them: each half keeps its own interface, its own preferences file and its own translations — the two programs you already know, under one roof.

What the merger allows, and neither could do alone: copy. Scanned pages go straight to printing with no file in between to find again — and you still see the preview, the paper and the settings before anything comes out.

IPP-Office needs MorphOS 3.20 and an IPP/AirPrint printer or an eSCL/AirScan scanner — that is, any device you could drive from a phone without a driver. It replaces IPP-Print and IPP-Scan, whose registration it shares: 19.90 euros alone version, 49.90 euros with Stylos or 69.90 with the bundle with Stylos and Sigma.

Sigma 2.7: formulas finally speak your language

Papiosaur releases Sigma 2.7, an update to his native MorphOS spreadsheet, built on MUI and TTEngine.

The change shows on the very first formula you type: you now write =SOMME(A1:A5) in French, =SUMME(A1:A5) in German — function names exist in thirteen languages. The file keeps the English names, so a sheet opens the same way anywhere, whatever the language of whoever wrote it.

On the charts side, title, labels and legend each take their own font and size, and fewer labels are dropped under the axis. Excel export keeps the font, size and alignment of the cells — they all came back as Calibri 11, sitting at the bottom — and import finally reads the charts, which were written but never read back.

Sigma requires MorphOS 3.20 and is translated into 15 languages. The demo version lets you open, edit and import; saving, PDF export and printing require the registered version, priced at 29.90 euros, or 69.90 euros for the Sigma + Stylos + IPP-Office bundle.

nextvi 7.3: the vi that reads right to left

Stefan Haubenthal updates his MorphOS port of nextvi 7.3, the vi/ex editor by Ali Gholami Rudi and Kyryl Melekhin.

nextvi is a vi of the short kind: a few thousand lines, no dependency, and one trait few editors on the platform share — it edits bidirectional UTF-8 text. Arabic or Hebrew, written right to left, mixed with Latin text in the same file, without either disturbing the other.

The archive also carries patch2vi, which turns a unified diff into a shell script of ex commands. A patch then becomes something you replay, edit on the way and reapply even where the context has drifted — which is precisely what a patch refuses to do.

It runs from the Shell: vi [-aemsv] [file ...]. The archive is 997 KB.

AmiArcadia 36.55: the debugger's grid finds its place again

Stefan Haubenthal updates his MorphOS port of AmiArcadia 36.55, the Signetics-based machines emulator by James Jacobs.

It brings back the Emerson Arcadia 2001 family, the Interton VC 4000 and various Signetics-based trainers, microcomputers and coin-op machines from the 1970s-80s, and doubles as an assembler and disassembler, all behind a ReAction interface.

This revision is again about fixes. The DRAW command was positioning its grids wrongly in some situations; that is repaired. Pong no longer crashes when the blanking toggle is disabled, and the G command can now be used whether paused or unpaused.

The archive is 10 MB and requires ReAction. The emulator is translated into nine languages, French among them.

Plants vs. Zombies 0.2.1: the Zombatar arrives on MorphOS

BeWorld uploads Plants vs. Zombies 0.2.1 to MorphOS-Storage, the MorphOS port of a cross-platform, community-driven reimplementation of the well-known tower defense game "Plants vs. Zombies: Game of the Year Edition".

The jump is bigger than it looks: the previous MorphOS build was 0.1.27, and two upstream releases have gone by since. The main one brings the Zombatar, the GOTY edition's zombie avatar creator, rewritten from scratch by the project. Demo recording and playback finally work, with timestamped files and the newest replay offered by default, and text input now accepts UTF-8 — accents included — along with copy, paste and undo.

Mind that the game ships without its data: you need the "Plants vs. Zombies GAOTY Edition" files. It also requires the SDL2 library (2.32.11, available on MorphOS Storage) and MorphOS 3.20. Language packs are available on the Steam side; simply drop the main.pak file into the program directory, the French version has been tested. The archive is 3 MB.

Sigma 2.6: big workbooks finally fit in memory

Yannick Buchy (Papiosaur) releases Sigma 2.6, an update to his native MorphOS spreadsheet, built on MUI and TTEngine.

The number for this release: a 9.5 MB workbook used to ask for 232 MB of memory to open, it now asks for 17.6. Thirteen times less. Documents that were simply out of reach now open on an ordinary machine.

Fit-to-page stops being ambiguous. The two modes are now told apart: all columns on one page, or the whole sheet on one page — not the same thing at all once a table gets long. A bubble explains the four choices, and the print preview no longer announces two pages for a sheet that fits on one.
